“Me being viral for only political or English tweets is feeling like I’m Matty Healy when he was active on twitter” – Hanaoka Kureha on her unexpected blow up.

Ponderosa May Bloom are a fairly new Alternative Idol group from Tokyo. Production and musical arrangement is handled primarily by the guitarist for the shoegaze band AprilBlue (エイプリルブルー), Azusa Suga, which gives their music a sleek indie rock and pop feel. Their new EP, Once More, With Feeling was released on February 11, 2026. I first became aware of the band last month, when a series of semi-viral, English language tweets from new member Kureha appeared on my timeline. Today, we’ll be covering some of these tweets as well as talking about the group and their music.
“But just who is this Hanaoka Kureha character?” I can already hear you asking. She’s a vocalist and Idol who joined Ponderosa May Bloom in July of 2025. Hanaoka describes herself as a big fan of UK rock music, guitar pop, and Western pop culture. She frequently talks about Western artists like The 1975, and recently dressed up in a sort of homage to Hole’s 1994 album Live Through This. She also is heavily associated with the color blue (Nemophila blue to be exact), hence the blue flowers, hair, and hearts she frequently uses in her tweets. Also, because she is an Idol, we get to know lots of personal fun facts, like she is a Taurus, for example.

The first series of tweets I saw, recalled a humorous story of her having too much to drink at a work party (relatable), and while in a drunken stupor confessed that she’s in an Idol group. This predictably created considerable interest among her coworkers, who were no doubt shocked and surprised. It’s not everyday that your coworker secretly moonlights as a popstar, after all. Kureha then goes on to mention that after the party, several of them made a point to look her up on her personal Instagram, and flooded her inbox with messages about listening to her music.
She follows up with a series of tweets the following morning where she talks about how her phone is blowing up from texts, going as far as to call it “THE nightmare”. I feel for her. Imagine if you had to constantly field requests to publicly sing and dance for your coworkers. I would simply die. Despite this flair for the dramatic, it appears everything mostly calmed down, and she suffered little serious effects besides embarrassment. At least she got a fun story out of the whole ordeal!
Truly, I sympathize with her initial feelings of panic and fear. Being an Idol is seriously hard work, and not a job for the faint of heart! There’s a lot of risk involved with putting yourself out there as a pretty, cool and talented young woman in the music industry. For example, she recently tweeted about some of the DMs and harassment she receives from a few poorly behaved fans, and weirdo men online. This sort of a thing would be flatly inappropriate even if she wasn’t an Idol, but many in the industry make it a point to keep their personal and romantic lives strictly private. Sometimes Idols are even explicitly prohibited from having boyfriends entirely, as part of their contract (at least, openly so). Don’t be like this guy.
All these tweets are quite fun, but what does Ponderosa May Bloom’s music sound like?
Sure, since you asked so nicely. Once More, With Feeling is a brisk 6 track EP totaling just under 25 minutes. Genre wise, they play a sort of shoegaze-themed J-pop. Think big, sing-along choruses with a focus on melodies and hooks. Loud, bright, shimmering guitars with lots of effects and reverb. The performances are strong; especially the vocals. It’s catchy, accessible pop music that goes down easy, yet remains enjoyable upon repeat listens. The contemporary, rock forward presentation makes it attractive even to those of us who might be inexperienced with Idol and J-pop music. My favorite tracks are the first two, ‘Flowline’ and ‘Hana no Ame’. Link to the EP on Bandcamp listed here for your convenience. It’s fun–check it out!
